My girlfriend is encouraging me to buy it so we can drive it to Saskatoon in July. $2500, which is about as cheap as I’ve ever seen a Wagoneer go for around here.

That is dangerously cheap. But I can see the rust poking out. Be prepared for that.

Usually the woman is the rational one in the relationship.  Go figure.

So, on the Tracey scale, just how rusty are we talking here?

She has the same rationality blind spot as I do when it comes to cars

You should do as your girlfriend suggests. Don’t you want to make her happy??

I know when I think of Saskatchewan, I think, “T hat’s where I would want the off-road capabilities of a Jeep.”

Hopefully not that bad. Or maybe hopefully bad, so I don’t buy it.

Hey now, I’ll probably be going down some nice flat dirt roads, I’d be crazy to do that in anything less than a Jeep with big BFGs on it

Hell fucking no.

Rear quarters half gone with no rocker rot? That’s a red flag. Two different colors of paint? Red flag. Counterfeit Chinese tires? Red flag. “Only needs a carb”? Red flag. Trying to unsuccessfully hide the front end sitting way too low? Big red flag. (These are IFS.)

Worse, they don’t say what transfer case. Lucky for you (not actually lucky) I can tell that’s a “4 wheel drive” low on the fender. Meaning there’s a Quadra Trac badge out back.

You can’t afford to repair a BW13xx. Seriously. I know what I charge. The chain is $250 best case, absolutely mandatory, and that’s about the cheapest part in there other than gaskets . Everything else has to be jobbed.

I was assuming there was also rocker rot, just underneath and not visible in shadow. I was hoping the low front end meant it was 2 wheel drive, but that does look like a 4 wheel drive badge, and I reaally don’t want full time 4wd. That is all good to know, thank you

Yup, I’ll be there for a wedding at the end of July. Making a little road trip out of it.

I’ll make another post soon and see if any prairie Oppos want to meet up

Look more closely; it had rocker rot. That’s why I drew attention to the mismatched paint. The rockers have been replaced or bondo’d to the hilt already.

And you do want 4WD in these, just not a suspect BW13xx. I am quite literally the only way you can buy most of the internal hard parts. If it’s in good shape, you can easily straighten it up for about a grand, and there’s some small improvements that can be done to keep a good running unit in shape.

But if the damage has already been done - or gods help you, somebody put MileMarker crap in it - it has to be upgraded to a full Four Talon. That’s the only actual fix for these. Which means having to freight the transmission and transfer case to Cleveland, probably having to re-case it , and right now at least a six month wait due to backlog at the job shop.

I mean, if you’re realistic about what it will cost you, BW1305/1399 isn’t a deal-breaker by itself. It’s just that ‘what it will cost you’ part. Which is complicated by the engine also being a ‘what it will cost you’ headache. Just going stock, it’s not so bad. Any sort of improvements? Get out your wallet, B ecause it’s a Jeep Thing(TM).

Honestly, if you want a crazy Jeep, I’ve got one open slot left for a WK Stormcaller. Which is cheaper than what it’d cost to build this one right. I mean it’s not cheap (coughcough $35k+ with pre-approved donor cough) but will your girlfriend really argue with heated, custom leather seats, 450HP+, and top end stereo? ;)

Ooh good point.

Part time 4wd would be good, but I definitely don’t want full time 4wd. Definitely not as needy a unit as it sounds like the borg warner is.

That does sound fun, but WKs aren’t what I’m in to, and she’s quite set on a Wagoneer

The BW1339 isn’t a needy unit any more than any other, if properly maintained. It’s when some idiot breaks it or doesn’t maintain it that it turns into a nightmare. Other than that? Just change fluid and check the chain and don’t abuse it. Everything after it, was designed to copy it for a reason. It’s one of the best ‘high speed’ transfer cases ever built.

The real problem is, the only option if you need internals is Four Talons. Which was designed to handle a significantly higher torque loads in extreme conditions. So it’s NOT a good idea to mate it to an engine producing, frankly, anything under 500 ft/lbs at the TH400's tailshaft . Which as you can guess, is NOT an easy number to hit without getting into serious engineering. (Even 480 at the crank, you’re talking $8k+ .)

The NP219 (‘80-’82) is perfectly fine though. It’s a pure-chain permanent 4WD, without vacuum operated center diff. NP208's are basically junk, and it’s not possible to adapt the NP242 without going to a high end custom ECU (e.g. MoTeC.)
